Hello Little Explorers! Today is December 21st, and it’s a very special day for everyone living in the Northern Hemisphere. Do you know why? It’s the Winter Solstice! While we are getting ready for our longest night of the year, Happy Toppy and Wiggly Wiggy are diving deep to uncover the science behind the chill and the magic happening beneath our feet.
It all comes down to a tilt! Did you know the Earth isn't standing straight up? It has a 23.5-degree axial tilt. On December 21st, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted furthest away from the sun. This gives us our shortest day and our longest, starriest night! 🌠
Even when the ground looks frozen and the air is biting cold, there is a secret "thermal blanket" keeping things cozy downstairs. It’s called the Thermal Cycle! 🧥💤
While we are wearing our thickest coats, the soil acts as a natural insulator. It traps the warmth from the previous months and protects tiny insects, seeds, and roots from the frost. Nature always has a plan to keep life safe until the spring!
